The ability to identify the patient correctly should be the first step towards preventing patient mismatch data errors. With effect from October 1st, 2013 all patient wristbands produced in the NHS are required to contain a 2D GS1 DataMatrix barcode containing at least the following patient information:

• NHS Number
• First Name and Last Name
• Date of Birth

This is to comply with the ISB1077 standard issued by the Information Standards Board.
