How the C3500 Created a Flexible Allergen Labelling Solution
Struggling with your allergen labelling? The Newt in Somerset were too, until they met the Epson C3500. This establishment needed a better way to label allergens for their artisan food and drink. Their pre-printed labels lacked flexibility, making it hard to keep up with seasonal changes and new batches - this led to wasted stock and extra costs.
With an on-site butchery, creamery, and brewery, they needed an on-demand labelling solution that matched their high-quality standards. We helped them find a system that’s as adaptable as their menus, ensuring every product is labelled efficiently and accurately.
Who is The Newt? What do they do?
The Newt in Somerset is a beautiful countryside estate situated in Bruton, England, combining historic charm with modern hospitality. Featuring Hadspen House, a luxury hotel, and The Farmyard, which is a rustic yet stylish retreat.
What truly sets The Newt apart is their farm-to-table philosophy, with on-site food production at its Bakery, Brewery, Creamery, and Butchery. Here, fresh bread is baked daily, craft beer is brewed in-house, artisanal cheeses are made from local dairy, and high-quality meats are expertly prepared - all ensuring guests experience the best of Somerset’s natural flavours.
The solution: How the Newt got an allergen labelling solution as flexible as their menus.
The Newt needed a simple, foolproof allergen labelling solution that any staff member could use with minimal training. After an on-site visit, it became clear that they required labelling stations in all six production facilities and their main office to keep up with demand. With an online recipe system already storing all their ingredient, allergen, and nutritional data, we developed a tailored solution - custom software that pulls this information directly from their platform and prints it via the Epson ColorWorks C3500.
ERS customised the system to ensure each production facility only had access to the labels relevant to them. Bakery staff could print labels for baked goods, while the butchery and creamery teams saw only their specific products - keeping the process simple and efficient. Meanwhile, the head office system had full access to all labels across every department, providing centralised control while allowing each facility to operate independently.
This easy-to-use, easily editable allergen labelling solution has completely transformed The Newt’s production process. It’s given them the flexibility to update labels instantly, enabling them to stay on track with seasonal changes whilst ensuring full compliance with allergen and nutritional regulations.
They also had the additional bonus of massive space savings. Previously, each facility had an entire wall of shelves stacked with pre-printed label rolls for every product. Now, with the on-demand colour label solution, they’ve freed up valuable space for essential ingredients and production materials - making their operation even more efficient.
Future goals following the C3500 success
After the success of the 2024 solution, The Newt is exploring custom software for each production facility and standardising labels to easily expand label production, including to the farm shop.
